Parents please stop buying your red-blooded American teenagers high-horsepower cars ... unless you're trying to get rid of them! Waste of a perfectly good Charger R/T:

I advocate spanking of kids. If they were my kids, il be smacking their ass with a wet hand.
And when i was a teenager (10 years ago) all I wanted to do was burnouts.

If you're going to make your kid a U-boat commander, I'm pretty sure a pretty good pocket submarine can be made for under thirty big ones... and it's reusable! Advantage, private sub - sorry Charger R/T. I mean, it's not a full size U-boat, but what is?

My parents said I couldn't have a car with an engine greater than 2 liters when they bought me my first car, hence why the first vehicle I purchased with my own money was a 4.6 V8. Unfortunately, the Kia Forte (which I gave back to them) they bought me was faster than my granny geared Grand Marquis anyway.

This isn't so bad, actually. If he's in the pool, he's off the road. Id rather a middle class teen ruin chargers with mommy and daddy's money than a billionaire's teen ruining rare and irreplaceable classics and supercars.

Didn't the billionaire teen ruin a Ford F-250 and a couple people?

my parents said the same thing roughly...no rwd, V8, sports cars etc.
Good thing they didn't know about turbocharged 2.0L four cylinder engines.
210 HP (which became 260 HP) , capable of a cool constant 155+ mph, and handles like its on rails.
As long as I told them it got good mpg, they were clueless. (Which it did, 35-36mpg)

Let's be honest though, just as many kids get in trouble with slow cars as do with fast ones. They just don't make the news.
"Kid wraps mom's minivan around a tree" isn't quite as big of a headline as "kid drops brand new charger in a pool."

I tried to do this, with an '83 dodge shelby when I was 16, and it was working until my father called about the insurance rates. That's when he got wise to it. Glad it worked for you.

I don't have the data - but the "car full of kids ... some/all die" items get plenty of coverage either way. If you look at the skid marks and position of the car in the pool they got themselves sideways at a pretty good clip. A van/SUV would have rolled. Also odd - no airbags deployed.
